CHOOSING BETWEEN AN INVERTER AND A NON-INVERTER AIRCONDITIONING UNIT
All new airconditioning units (whether inverter or non-inverter) run on ozone-friendly R410 gas. This replaces the old R22-type units with the harmful CFC gasses. Non-inverter units have fixed-speed compressors, meaning that on start-up the compressor runs at full capacity resulting in higher energy consumption, and less effective temperature control. The unit achieves the selected temperature, and the compressor switches off. Once the room temperature rises by approximately 2°C (when on cooling), the compressor starts up and the cooling cycle begins to cool the room back down to the selected temperature. This results in a yo-yo cooling pattern.
Inverter units have variable speed compressors, meaning that the unit determines what cooling capacity is needed to achieve the selected temperature in the shortest amount of time. Once the temperature is achieved, the unit will start to control to compressor which will run at variable speeds and thus provide continuous cooling. The unit will automatically add the necessary cooling to maintain the selected temperature. Running at variable speed requires a fraction of the energy that a non-inverter unit requires.
